Day 5 - Confluencia to Plaza de Mulas - 4300m

I get so excited when my phone rings and its Ray from the mountain. He said he was standing outside with sleet and icy rain falling everywhere making it look so beautiful. Hopefully by the time he gets to base camp he will be able to send me some photos. The team all passed their medical yesterday however Ray's blood pressure was a little on the high side - but he just needs to take his medicine to fix it. They managed to get a short hike in yesterday as well - walking along the river.

Today is a big day 8-10 hours of hiking, the biggest of the expedition other than the summit day. The path once again crosses over Horcones river and follows a gradual but broad valley up to the Playa Ancha. This massive plain seems to go on forever but eventually it tapers out on the final steep ground before Plaza de Mulas and their base camp. Most of today's hiking will be gradual and easy going. The final few kilometres will be steeper and rougher ground as they head into base camp. They are reminded to stop and take a moment to look around. They are surrounded by 5000m peaks. 8-10 hours hiking.

Ray has set himself the target of raising R22 840.00 for The Sunflower Fund - R100 for every 100ft climbed. The Sunflower Fund recruits potential blood stem cell donors and raises funds to pay the R2500.00 tissue-typing test cost per donor required in the recruitment process.

To support Ray in his mission, visit his cause page on Given Gain to make a donation.
